The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has today announced Nottingham Hospitals Charity as the charity partner for the Aegon Open Nottingham tennis tournament that is coming to the city in June this year.
The Aegon Open Nottingham will see two tournaments take place in June, the women’s WTA event taking place from 6-14 June 2015, and the men’s ATP event being staged from 20-27 June 2015. Both tournaments will be an integral part of the new British grass court season, which in 2015 will see a three week window between Roland Garros and Wimbledon for the very first time. The extended grass court season will enable some of the world’s best players extra time to find their feet on grass and make the most of the best grass-courts in the country.
Chief Executive of Nottingham Hospitals Charity Barbara Cathcart says: “It’s very exciting that Nottingham has been chosen to host the Aegon Open Nottingham and we are thrilled to be the chosen partner for this major international tournament. I’m pleased that Nottingham’s reputation as a centre of excellence for sport continues to encourage prestigious events to the city. I want to thank the LTA for choosing Nottingham Hospitals Charity as their charity partner and helping us to highlight our work to people all over the world as a result.”
A key date for the diary will be Tuesday 9 June, the Nottingham Hospitals Charity Day at the Aegon Open Nottingham where corporate hospitality tickets will be available to purchase to raise money for the charity. The British women’s number one Heather Watson, is already confirmed to attend the event and tickets will include a centre court pass, three course meal, afternoon tea and a selection of drinks.
All money raised will support the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal which is raising £3 million to build an onsite helipad at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC). The appeal was launched in July 2014 to enable critically-injured patients to be transferred via Air Ambulance to the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre more quickly, giving them access to the life-saving care they need when they need it most.
Dan Craggs Senior Community Fundraiser for Nottingham Hospitals Charity says: “The Saving Lives Helipad Appeal is a fantastic campaign. We desperately need a helipad at the QMC to help patients to get to specialist care quicker. It’s fantastic that the LTA will be helping us to highlight this appeal at a time when all eyes will be focussed on the East Midlands! There are lots of activities already planned for June and more to be announced but it’s very exciting that the Aegon Open Nottingham is coming to the East Midlands and that Nottingham Hospitals Charity will be part of this.”
Aegon Open Nottingham (ATP) Tournament Director, Paul Hutchins said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Nottingham Hospitals Charity for this summer’s tournament. It is great news that world class tennis is coming back to the city and we are excited about delivering an event that will be a highlight in Nottingham’s summer sporting calendar.
“Nottingham Hospital’s Charity does some fantastic work for sites across the city and we are proud to be associated with them. It will be a successful partnership that will raise the profile of both organisations and also raise money for a great local charity.”
Previous winners of the Nottingham men’s title include Richard Gasquet of France, currently ranked inside the world’s top 10, and former British number one Greg Rusedski.
